The British Dietetic Association (BDA) Industry Specialist group has officially been launched for Dietitians, student Dietitians and nutrition professionals registered with the BDA and interested in a career in industry.
What is an industry Dietitian?
An industry dietitian may work across a variety of areas and aims to optimise nutritional value for businesses and industries. They may focus on creating programs, plans, standards, and procedures that ensure a dietary product meets all the health requirements to accommodate their place of work or production. Beyond just providing nutritional advice and practice, industry dietitians may also act as consultants who advise businesses on how to best approach public health issues and safety regulations with their specific foods or products. In addition to these duties, they also strive to educate and communicate with personnel at their place of business or production about healthy nutrition and how it relates directly to being a successful organisation. Overall, an industry dietitian is an important asset for businesses that want to ensure they approach health solutions strategically.
What are the BDA Industry Specialist group’s objectives?
- Raise the profile of Dietitians and nutrition professionals working in industry
- Support Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and networking opportunities
- Encourage career progression
- Develop policy and resources
- Cultivate the future workforce by fostering talent and creating student placements
“Dietetics is a hugely varied profession with so many work opportunities both in clinical and non-clinical settings. Many of the skills we learn as dietitians are cross-transferrable to a food industry setting, although through my own personal experience, I’m aware that taking a less-conventional career path can sometimes feel daunting and lonely. Therefore, I’m delighted to be involved with this new BDA Specialist Group, whose sole purpose is to encourage, promote and support the work of dietitians in industry.”
